Our vets are not forgotten. This is the message sent by Assemblyman Tom DiNapoli (D-Great Neck) who collected 60 cartons of handmade valentines and donations from schools in Great Neck, Mineola, Manhasset, Herricks, New Hyde Park, Port Washington, and Harbor Day Care.

"I was pleased to sponsor a Valentines for Vets program to give our children a chance to send a Valentine's Day card or donate items that our veterans would find useful. As a member of the Assembly Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs, I am proud to have sponsored and advocated for legislation that honors the extraordinary service of New York's veterans and provides them and their families with the support that is so well deserved," said Assemblyman DiNapoli.

First stop for the project was the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook. Residents of the 350-bed skilled nursing facility joined the assemblyman in the Pledge of Allegiance which was followed by a musical program. Following the program, the residents received their special valentines and items from the 150 disposable cameras, 300 pairs of socks, three cartons of large print puzzles, note paper, pads, stamps, and 300 specially-made Big Band CDs that had been donated.

Assemblyman DiNapoli also presented Fred Sganga, executive director of the veterans home, with a $500 check from Dr. Marin Handler of Great Neck. The generous donation is earmarked for recreation.

"Thank you so much for serving our country in the war. I pray for all of you every night. Good luck and keep safe," wrote Sammy N., a student in his Valentine message.

An unsigned valentine also expressed thanks for "everything that you have done for this country. You can never know how much you mean to me, my family, and this country."

The Northport VA Medical Center, the next scheduled stop, had to be postponed due to a flu outbreak that put the facility into quarantine. Arrangements are being made to deliver the remaining items as soon as possible.
