Mineola Boys Wrap-up Hoops Season
The Mineola boys varsity basketball team ended its up and down season much better than it started, according to head coach Scott Donnellan. "Our steady improvement could be seen with drastic improvement over the last five games of the season," the coach said.
The Mustangs revered the scores of earlier games against the same opponents. "Although we lost, we played hard to finish the season," said Donnellan.
Mineola ended the season with a record of 1-9 in Conference A-IV. The team's overall record was 4-14.
The Mustangs were led by seniors Sean Bailey and Mike DeStefano, who both had some great games. DeStefano had a high game of 21 points and another with 19 in which he hit five three pointers. "He single handedly kept us in contention against Lynbrook. Sean Bailey also had a solid season for us. He led the team in scoring and rebounding," said Donnellan.
Bailey scored 23 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in the team's only league win against Lynbrook.
Another bright spot was the hustle and hard work of senior Kevin Franciotti, who led the team in scrapes and bruises by doing the dirty work for the team. "He surpassed all expectations by providing some offensive output this year," said Donnellan.
Franciotti had season high games of 16 and 15 points.
The Mustangs did not meet their pre-season goal of making the playoffs. But, Coach Donnellan said he was happy with the progress the team made from the beginning of the season. He said the highlights clearly were the opportunity to play at Madison Square Garden in December, the lone league win over the undefeated Lynbrook and the fifth annual Reggie Carter Night, during which three of the four previous captains were on hand to see Tom Owens honored as this year's Reggie Carter captain.
