Mineola High School student-athletes Amy Kemmler and Michael DeStefano received the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation Award for 2005 for achievements in academics, athletics and community service.
Amy has received the quarterly physical education award numerous times and is honored to have been selected to receive the Outstanding Physical Education Student of the Year award this year as a senior.
Amy will graduate with 10 varsity letters and has been on three conference-winning teams. Amy has been captain in lacrosse and winter track and has received Academic All-American Honors and All-Conference Honors in lacrosse as well as numerous Scholar Athlete awards in winter track and volleyball. She is a volunteer lacrosse coach for Mineola's PAL program and is also ranked within the top 25 of this year's graduating class.
Amy looks forward to physical education class and is viewed as a selfless and determined leader by her teachers, coaches and peers.
Michael has received several awards throughout his four-year career. He has an overall average in physical education of 99 and has received the Outstanding Physical Education Student Award three separate quarters.
Michael was captain of the cross country varsity track team and a two-year captain of the junior varsity basketball team. He received Honorable Mention All County in baseball as a sophomore and All-County honors in baseball as a junior. He is looking forward to a great season in the spring of this year. He is also currently the point guard for the varsity basketball team and has won the MVP awards for the Garden City Tip-off and the Carle Place Coaches for Cancer tournaments.
His community service includes assisting with PAL softball and being a member of the Mineola Fire Department. His overall assistant to educators during physical education classes and his intensity and selfless acts in every sport he has participated in have been widely recognized. His overall "team first" attitude and leadership have played a large part in receiving the honor.
