The annual games to be played in remembrance of Reggie Carter will be played on Friday, Jan. 21. The evening will kick off with varsity wrestling at 4 p.m. vs. Oyster Bay High School, followed at 6 p.m. by girl's varsity basketball by Clarke High School and the boy's varsity basketball game vs. Island Trees at 8 p.m.
Mr. Carter was an assistant principal at Mineola High School. He tragically passed away over Christmas break in 1999.
Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for students and children. All proceeds from the games go to the Reggie Carter Scholarship Fund, which is given to a deserving member of the senior class who portrays the values and image exemplified by Mr. Carter.
Mr. Carter played for the New York Knicks from 1980 to 1982. His true calling though was being around students so that he could help to educate them.
In 2002, the senior commons area outside the gym, in a quiet alcove with benches for students to enjoy when the weather is cold, was dedicated to the former assistant principal.
"He always wanted to give back to the community. When he stopped playing basketball, he got into education through a friend and he just took off from there," said Carter's widow, Alicia, at the 2002 ceremony.
