Long time Williston Park resident and noted professional pianist, Edwin "Buddy" Koss passed away on Dec. 21, 2004. He was 91 years old. Known to friends, neighbors and seniors of North Hempstead as Buddy, he was a member of the famed Bunny Berigan Orchestra, worked on ships traveling to Bermuda and Rio de Janeiro and, upon retirement, became involved with the senior citizens of Westbury as well as the summertime "Mondays Fundays" at Bar Beach.
Buddy became a professional piano player in 1936 when he joined the American Federation of Musicians Local Union 802. He then began working at Manhattan's Roseland Ballroom, which featured such stars as Anthony Trini, the Charlie Barnett Orchestra and Enoch Light. After WWII, Buddy formed his own band at the Avalon Ballroom - located above Jack Dempsey's Restaurant - where he played an assortment of cha-chas, tangos, rhumbas and Viennese waltzes for 25 years.
Buddy even found time to play at weekly luncheon meetings of local Kiwanis groups, including the Bellerose, Fresh Meadows, Flushing and Bayside Kiwanis Clubs.
Buddy, the father of the late Barbara Koss, is survived by his beloved wife Grace and sister Mildred. He is the cherished grandfather of Dianna and Randy and the adored great-grandfather of Blake Webber.
Religious services conducted by Father Kevin Barry, were held at the Thomas F. Dalton Funeral Home in Williston Park with interment following immediately at Calverton National Cemetery.
Daniel Patrick Quinn, 84, of Mineola, died on Dec. 23, 2004. He was a social worker for several agencies including the Catholic Committee for Refugees, the Angel Guardian Home, St. John's Hospital and the Seafield Agency where he provided addiction counseling. He was a native of Motherwell, Scotland. Husband of Helen. Father of Daniel Jr., Helen Yetman, William, Carol Caracappa, Mary Burke and Jean Bailey. Brother of John Quinn, Mary McGarrity and Sr. Frances Patrice, CSJ. Grandfather of 15. Arrangements were made by the Cassidy Funeral Home, Mineola. Funeral Mass at Corpus Christi RC Church.
