During 2004, Mineola lost two of its former mayors.

Stanley Krause, who served as mayor from 1959 to 1975 and trustee from 1953 to 1959, died at the age of 94. During Mr. Krause's administration, there were several changes that took place in the village. Mr. Krause and his administration were responsible for the construction of 15 municipal parking fields, the Mineola community pool, rezoning which led to the construction of apartment houses, sidewalks and gutters and the construction of the library.

More recently, the village lost the only female mayor in its history when Ann Galante died at the age of 75. Mrs. Galante served as mayor from 1985 to 1991 and trustee from 1982 to 1985. Mrs. Galante served as a role model for women since she inspired others to go into public service. Among her accomplishments as mayor was bringing an award-winning tree planting program to the village.

The Mineola School District unveiled a five-year capital improvement plan which addressed maintenance and repairs to the school buildings since there was no preventive maintenance plan nor capital improvement plan in place. Toward the end of the year, the school board voted to go ahead with a referendum in February 2005 for the repairs and to build a football/track facility at the high school. Mayor Jack M. Martins appointed a commission to study the feasibility of Mineola having its own police department. The department would only come about if it proves to be cost effective and the public votes for it in a referendum. Paul Cusato won election to the Mineola Board of Trustees. For Cusato it was a dream come true to serve the village in which he grew up. His running mate, Linda Fairgrieve, was also re-elected to another term, making it a clean sweep for the Hometown Party over the New Line Party. Cusato commented at the swearing in ceremony that it was one of the proudest moments of his life and mentioned his parents who have meant so much to him. Winthrop-University Hospital unveiled its state-of-the-art heart surgery center and pediatric in-patient center. Later in the year, New York Jets center Kevin Mawae visits Winthrop to announce a program to benefit pediatrics. The Mineola Volunteer Ambulance Corps celebrated 25 years of service to the community. However, the celebration was bittersweet. On the day of the party, the ambulance corps' co-founder Louise DiGiorgio, who founded the corps with her husband Joe, suffered a heart attack and would later died. Her memory lives on in each call these dedicated men and women answer. On the five-year anniversary of the tragedy at Columbine High School, Increase the Peace, a club at Mineola High School, reaffirms its pledge for students to respect each other and maintain peace. Under the leadership of Mayor Martins, the village board unanimously approved a budget for the 2004-2005 fiscal year. It was revealed later in the year that the 2003-2004 budget, Martins' first as mayor, closed out the year with a $342,000 surplus. Mineola High School received a renovation, which included a new library and the reconstruction of its main office and guidance suites. After the school budget failed twice last year, causing the board of education to adopt a contingency budget, voters passed a $64,970,912 spending plan for the 2004-2005 school year. Chaminade High School, which purchased the abandoned Koeppel Ford site on Jericho Turnpike, received approval from the village board of trustees to build a gymnasium and auditorium on the site. John DaVanzo received two well deserved honors. He was informed he was the recipient of the Firemen's Association of the State of New York Fire Service Achievement Award for the Year 2004. He later learned he also was the recipient of a federal award. In addition, Mr. DaVanzo, along with Robert Hinck and Candi Maia, was appointed by Mayor Martins to serve on the village's centennial committee, which will organize the village's centennial celebration in 2006. The Meadow Drive School celebrated its golden anniversary in fine form. Meadow Drive became one of only two schools on Long Island-five in the state-to be named a national "Blue Ribbon School" for 2004 by US Secretary of Education Rod Paige. Meadow Drive earned the award for its dramatic improvement of student performance on state tests, in accordance with No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation, scoring in the top 10 percent. Less than 300 schools were chosen for the honor nationwide. On Saturday, Oct. 9, Hampton Stadium was the site of the New York State Field Bank Conference Marching Band Competition, part of the Long Island-based championship competitions for marching bands. The Mineola Marching Band received the highest score out of the 12 schools that competed. The Mineola Mustang Run was again held as the annual run/walk. Mineola's biggest fundraiser raised record amounts of money. The Mineola High School varsity sports teams had their share of success in 2004. The Mineola girls' soccer and volleyball teams won their conference. In addition, the boys' football and soccer teams made the playoffs. Hampton Street Stadium was even the site of a night football game. Towards the end of the year, Mayor Martins and village officials discovered the village was paying bills to the Town of North Hempstead for the dumping of garbage done by a private company. The village commenced a lawsuit against the company, Waste Management, and the Town of North Hempstead.
