The Corpus Christi fifth grade boys won their game at Notre Dame of New Hyde Park on Saturday, Dec. 11, bringing their season record to 3 - 0.
Unfortunately for the Lions of Corpus Christi they were without the services of one of their mainstays on the team, Justin Pilla, who is out with stitches under his eye; however, being the supportive teammate that he is, he has become the team's leading cheerleader until he can resume play.
The boys came out of the gate at the beginning of the game and never looked back. The scoring was spread out as each and every player on the team contributed points to the Corpus Christi effort. The part of the game that amazed the crowd of too many to count, was the stifling defense of the team and the ball movement on the offensive end of the court.
The team is made up of a group that emphasizes hitting the open man and helping out on defense. Several people in the crowd commented how they were reminded of the 1969 New York Knicks. The defense was led by Matt "the Eraser" Eccher, Pascal "the Tree" Poropat, Rich "Thunder" Cunha and Eddie "the Man of Steal" Novak.
Matt "Jump Ball" Sliwinski, Ryan "the Shooter" Harty and Sean "Tough Stuff' Murphy dove for and came up with most loose balls. Matt "the Disher," Tyler "Barkley-as in Charles" Kapela and Christian "Swish" Lird consistently hit the open man.
The team again hit all of their free throws in the game and are hitting at an 85 percent clip for the season.
