The Corpus Christi fifth grade boys basketball team has started the season with a very exciting win over St. Vincent De Paul of Elmont 39-23.

The game was played at Corpus Christi before a SRO (standing room only) boisterous crowd that spent the majority of the game on their feet. The boys jumped out to a big lead from the beginning and never looked back. The team was led by Steady Eddie Novak with 10 points, newcomer to the team Christian Lird with 9 points and several big passes, Tyler Kapela with 5 points. The rock (basketball) was controlled at point guard by Matthew Rudolph with 5 points and Sean Murphy who combined dished out double figures in assists. The offensive and defensive glass was controlled by Matt Eccher, Pascal Poropat and Ricardo Cunha combined for 9 points and 32 rebounds. The Corpus Christi minutemen off the bench made the difference, led by Ryan Harty, with a clutch 4th quarter basket, and Matthew Sliwinski with a huge 4th quarter foul shot to ice the game. The coaches were very ecstatic as the boys were 7-9 from the free throw line. It does show the foul shooting at practice is definitely paying off.

The Corpus Christi fifth grade boys' basketball team continues to roll with a big victory over St. Anne's of Garden City 34-16 making their season record 2-0.

The boys with passports in hand went on their first road trip of the season to the St. Anne's parish arena. The team, missing a couple of key players, were fortunate enough to get one of the minutemen, Justin Pilla back from the disabled list (a family commitment for Thanksgiving).

Eddie Novak with 12 points and Christian Lird with 2 points were automatics with their shots. Corpus Christi's Quad Towers of Matt Eccher 6 points, Pascal Poropat 4 points, Ricardo Cunha 2 points, and Justin Pilla 2 points had 30+ rebounds and numerous blocked shots for the game. Matthew Rudolph 6 points and Sean Murphy distributed the ball from the point guard position. The team defense was what everyone had hoped for led by the tenacious play of Ryan Harty.

The team's next game as they continue their road trip is under the Golden Dome of Notre Dame and will show us all what they're made of with the long bus rides (10 minute car rides) and all the adverse conditions of these extended road trips.
