For the third consecutive year, the Wheatley School varsity cross country team has won the Nassau County Class "C" championship. Under the leadership of veteran coach, Dan Walsh, the team swept through the dual meet season with a record of 11-1, losing only to Oyster Bay. Early in the season, the Wildcats garnered impressive second-place finishes in two highly competitive invitational meets. They competed in the Jim Smith Meet, hosted by Suffolk County coaches at Sunken Meadow and the team also traveled to upstate Brewster to compete in the Bear Classic Meet.
The team was led by our three captains, seniors Corey Squire and Eric Florio and junior Ryan Birnbaum. Throughout the year, the captains were the top three runners. They were joined by juniors Yuting Chiang and Harriman Lee, sophomores Christopher Carlin and Greg Cutajar-Wynne, and freshman Sean Stagnari. Rounding out the team were juniors Shahrukh Mallick, Jordan Manor and Leslie Tang.
After capturing the Nassau County championship to qualify for the New York State Championship Meet, the team traveled to Chanango State Park in Binghamton to compete against other teams from across the state. In an 11-team field, Wheatley finished in seventh place, which was the best place finish since the 1968 NYS championship team. Corey Squire, who captured the Nassau County Class "C" title for the second consecutive year, finished 33rd in his class and was closely followed by Ryan Birnbaum, who finished just a second behind Corey. Sophomore Abby Squire, who was our lone female entrant in the state meet, finished in 55th place. This was Abby's second straight appearance in the state finals.
