The 6th Grade Girls White team have now won five straight games after an opening night loss. Their 5-1 record is good enough for a tie for first place in their division. This high-powered team uses the full court press to wear down their opponents and then their many weapons on offense take over. Krystie Kern, Heather Gessner and Kalie Medlock take turns leading the team in scoring while Tina Basile, Megan Brady and Katie Dul work the boards.
The White's closest game in this win streak was a hard fought 20-15 win over a tough St. Boniface team. This game was not decided until the final seconds when Keri Medlock hit two clutch-free throws as she finished with a game-high nine points. Kayla Vesley's gain is leading the team in steals and shows her scoring touch when the team is struggling. Jacquie Behan and Catherine Carboine have been sparkplugs for this team coming off the bench.
The Maroon team might not have the win total of the White's but their energy and enthusiasm is leading to an exciting brand of basketball. Newcomer Tracy Reardon is leading all scores with a 12-point average. The other new girls Angela Athan, Bethanne Bartecher, Hayley Ward and Kelsey Bauman have all been great additions to the Maroons. The veteran leadership on this team has shown throughout the season as each game a different girl makes a vital contribution. These veteran leaders are Ashley Pusey, Paula Pinto, Sarah Couto and Ann Marie Rolon. Vickey Kim and Maureen Purcell anchor the middle for the Maroons. Maureen Purcell has had to make the biggest adjustment by taking on the responsibilities of covering the other team's tallest players and she has proven time and time again she is up to the challenge. The Maroons are still only one game out of a playoff spot and with improvement over the last several games, Coach Nancy Gessner might see both her teams again reach the second season. All this is being accomplished while both teams are missing valuable players Janine Miller and Erin Carr-Fragiacomo.
