"Firefighters make significant sacrifices and put their lives on the line every day to protect people and their property," said Murray. "What makes the activities of our talented honorees so compelling is the fact that they volunteer, giving of their personal time, to ensure that our residents are safe."
Among the deserving honorees who received the Town of Hempstead's Firematic Award was Mineola resident and ex-captain of the Mineola Fire Department Marty Dawber.
Mr. Dawber joined the Mineola Fire Department in 1966. He quickly assimilated into the department as an active firefighter in Truck Company Two, which is known as the "Workhouse Company."
Mr. Dawber has held the position of warden for his company for 25 years, consistently receiving the support of the membership he represents. His responsibilities include making administrative decisions and developing policies that impact the entire department.
The members of Company Two recognized Mr. Dawber's devotion by awarding him the Truck Company Two Firefighter of the Year Award. This would be the first of many accolades for Marty. His service to the department would be recognized again when he was twice awarded the coveted Mineola Fire Department Firefighter of the Year Award. He is the first and only member in department history to receive this award two times.
Although he has retired from his professional career, Mr. Dawber continues to serve the Mineola community as a firefighter. On a daily basis he can be found gearing up for a fire call. Once on the scene, Marty is legendary as Company Two's roof man.
With 38 years of service, some might think Mr. Dawber would take a break. However, he truly emulates what it means to be a part of the "Workhouse Company." His dedication to the residents of Mineola is clearly evident as he continues to respond to alarms at all hours of the day and night.
A man of incredible skill and enormous accomplishment, Marty Dawber is truly a role model for new and veteran firefighters alike. The Town of Hempstead was proud to present him with the 2004 Firematic Award.
