The Mineola Chief's 7-year-old's went and played on the road twice this past week. On Sunday they tied the Uniondale Knights 0-0 and then on Wednesday night they beat the Inwood Buccaneers 13-6, to move to a winning record of 4-1-1.
This past Sunday in Uniondale the name of the game was defense, as the Chiefs tied the Knights 0-0. The Uniondale Knights were 8-0 last year and 4-0 this year, beating other team's by an average of 28 points per game. Then they met the Mineola Chief's defense. The defense was all over the field causing havoc, with intense pressure and gang tackling. The defensive line of Teddy Capsis, Ryan Eccher, Matthew Lafaye, Michael Callego, Johnathan Igoe and Kyle Spruill kept the pressure on the Uniondale offense all day long. The linebackers were fearless as they attacked the ball and finished the job with great gang tackling. They were led by Andrew Cunningham, Thomas O'Connell, Michael Patalano, Brian Smith, Eric McCloskey and Peter McCormack. On a key fourth down play, McCormack made a beautiful open field tackle to end any hopes the Knights might have had. On the day, the Chiefs held the Knights to minus yards and no first downs.
On Wednesday night, the 7-year-old Chiefs got to play their first ever game under the lights down in Inwood, as they beat the Buccaneers 13-6. On the first series the Bucs scored on a double reverse to take the early lead 6-0. But that was it for Inwood. The Chiefs's offense moved the ball all night long because of great blocking by the offensive line, centered by Jonathan Igoe and anchored by Gavin Dowd, Michael Delio, Colin Conroy, Edwin Rojas, Kyle Spruill, Kyle Leinhart and Nicholas D'Angelo.
In the first half, the Chiefs put together a terrific scoring drive, with key runs by Ryan Eccher, Andrew Cunningham, and Michael Patalano.
