A wonderful season and a special time of year is upon us. A time when we can enjoy the bright and vibrant colors of the autumn leaves as the temperatures dip to a cool, but still pleasant level.
It is the time of year which also brings shorter days and less pleasant weather, thus making it so important to keep these safety tips in mind:
* Always wear bright colored clothing beginning at dusk and right through the night. Joggers, runners, bikers, even you walkers -- neon-colored clothing is best at night. Today's sport-oriented clothing even has reflective materials sewn right into the garments designed in a very fashionable manner.
* Don't let hats or hoods cover or block your vision.
* Extreme caution should always be exercised when using a radio, CD, or tape deck headphones.
* Cross streets only at intersection crosswalks. Always cross with traffic - never against it.
* Bicyclists - It's the law! Wear an approved helmet and follow the rules of the road.
* Motorists - Reduce your speed and be alert for children.
* Wear your seatbelt at all times and be sure your passengers do the same.
Halloween is but a short time away, so during this spooky holiday season, parents and children alike should take note of these special safety tips:
* Never trick or treat alone.
* Never go into a stranger's house.
* Wear only bright colored clothing and/or costumes. Reflective garments are best.
* Never use a mask that blocks your vision or reduces your hearing.
* Carry a flashlight.
* Walk on sidewalks or paths not in the street.
* Don't eat any treats until checked by your parents. Certainly any unwrapped treats or items that are not in their original packaging with the proper seal still intact, should be discarded. Homemade treats from strangers are a no-no.
* Damaging or defacing property is a crime! Don't get involved.
* Never break pumpkins in the roadway as that cause a hazard to motorists and pedestrians.
* Mom and Dad - Make sure you, a relative, a well-known friend or neighbor accompany your children when they go out.
* Be sure the children understand how important it is that all treats are brought home first for inspection.
* If you're out driving, particularly at night, be alert for excited trick or treaters.
