Guess who was working at Werner's Deli? I was surprised to find Werner Gerland back behind the counter of the deli, which he owned for so many years. Werner and his wife, Frieda, still live in the area. Werner is almost 70, but says he can use the extra money Hey, who can't.

We were saddened by the death of Al Horner, long one of our faithful ushers at Corpus Christi Church. Al hardly ever missed his Sunday turn. If he wasn't at his post, you knew something was wrong. Our condolences to his wife, Marion, son, Robert, and the rest of the family.

Frank Syracuse has retired after 12 years as a code enforcer for the village. He did a great job along with Laurie McCarron, Stuart Goldstein, Florence Peterson and Ron Rontal. It's a tough job. Nobody is happy when they receive a parking ticket and the enforcers take plenty of abuse trying to do their job of keeping traffic moving and parking spaces free.

Enjoyed a fine Irish breakfast and the new Recovery Room restaurant, opposite the railroad station. It's just around the corner from the hospital, thus the catchy name. Grace and I were with long-time friends, Faust and Maryann Guarino.

Nick Butino of Beebe Road says that fall is his favorite time of the year. My wife remembers one of his sons, John, as a youngster with several other neighbor children coming to our house most afternoons for cookies. John is a young man now in his 20s and quite a hockey player and probably still likes cookies.
