The plan for Chaminade High School to build an auditorium and athletic gymnasium on the site of the former Koeppel Ford dealership on the south side of Jericho Turnpike has been approved by the Village of Mineola Zoning Board. The decision of whether to grant the school a special use permit to construct the facility is now up to the Village of Mineola Board of Trustees.
A hearing held by the zoning board was held Aug. 17 on the application for variances for both height and parking. The village did receive a resolution from the Nassau County Planning Commission, which decided that the variance was up to the local jurisdiction.
The zoning board then unanimously agreed to grant the variances for height and parking. During the public hearing, in front of the board of trustees, some residents expressed concerns about parking. Chaminade will be adding 75 parking spaces and, according to the president of the school, Father James Williams, activities that are currently taking place in the school will be moved to the new location. There are no plans to add to the calendar nor to add to the current enrollment, which stands at about 1,600.
The decision now is up to the village board of trustees.
