There is a group of ladies who daily attend 9 a.m. Mass at Corpus Christi and then go to the Jericho Diner for breakfast. Catherine Murphy, Vera Barrick, Fran Dempsey and Mary Jane Deignan were there the other day. Two others who are often with the group are Teddy McCormack and Mary Calfapietra. They joke that they are holding a seat for my wife Grace. But as the group sometimes refer to themselves as the "widows club" I'm not looking forward to Grace joining.

Cheers for Mayor Jack Martins who took time out of his busy schedule to spend an hour and a half talking with the Mineola Chamber of Commerce directors. They discussed many matters including a possible downtown street fair, parking meters and other subjects. The mayor also attends most meetings of the chamber. Mr. Martins has on three occasions met with members of the business community at the village hall.

Jack Levin, whose family owns the Soundview Inn and restaurant in Greenport is quite a fellow. He is 95 years old and plays nine holes of golf three times a week. He also does light work around the complex which is run by his daughters. Speaking of that village there is a plaque in town on the property of a business that sells nautical supplies that reads "On this corner on July 4, 1776 absolutely nothing happened."

The Greenport movie theater which has been in operation for many years had an ad in their lobby from 1936 for the Great Dictator with Charlie Chaplin and Jack Oakie and for a second picture with Barbara Stanwyck. They also were advertising their Screeno game with the biggest prize in the theater's history, $50. Greenport has recently seen the opening of a new hotel, the Harborfront. At $300 a room per night, we will not be among their guests. As the Harborfront serves only a continental breakfast it works out well for the new Front Street Station restaurant across the street. This pub-like, inexpensive restaurant has pictures along their walls of many local RR stations in Suffolk.
