Edward J. Spears, formerly of Mineola, Levittown and Uniondale, died on June 20, 2004. He was a retired assessor, NC Tax Assessors Office and owner of Spears Fence Co. He was a veteran of the US Army and Merchant Marine service. He will be remembered for his generosity, enthusiasm, encouragement, love and affection. Father of Peter Spears (Donna) of Greenlawn, NY, Peggy Marcucci (Romolo) of Chatham, NJ, Kerry Spears of Waldwick, NJ, and Jenny Spears of Northport Village. Grandfather of Matthew, Daniel, Megan, Peter, James and Caroline. Brother of Bernadette O'Brien (Patrick), Muriel Smith (Jim) and the late Lorraine Schwartz (Howard). Arrangements were made by the Cassidy Funeral Home, Mineola. Funeral Mass at Corpus Christi RC Church. Contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
Frank Carboine, 67, longtime Mineola High School teacher, passed away on June 30, 2004 at his summer residence in Cortland, NY. Born Dec. 24, 1936, Francis Anthony Carboine Jr., son of the late Francis and Mary Carboine of Garden City, retired in 1993 after over 30 years in the Mineola School District. Frank was a physical education teacher who also taught many of our residents how to drive over the years, running the Driver's Education program in Mineola High School. He served as the bowling and soccer coach as well as a class advisor.
Father of eight and grandfather of 13, Frank spent the retirement years in Cortland and Winter Haven, FL, enjoying golf. Four of his children, Michael, MaryJean LaMarca, Nancy D'Amato and Karen Tabel, followed in his footsteps and are now teachers on LI and in Cortland. Frank's son, Robert, an NYPD detective, and his family are part of the Mineola School community, living in the neighborhood and sending their children to Cross Street School and the Mineola Middle School. Daughter Lynn Carboine also has ties to the community, working at Winthrop Hospital as a physician's assistant in the Emergency Room and daughter Carol Pierce is an attorney with the District Attorney's office in the Bronx. Frank was predeceased by his daughter Susie (1988), who as an LPN at Winthrop hospital. A scholarship in her memory is still serving the nursing students at Winthrop Hospital. He is also survived by his former wife, Susan, and sister, Mary Rita Heberer, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Services were held at the Commack Abbey and interment was at Commack Cemetery.
