The old Motor Parkway which was a great road when it opened in 1910 was mentioned in a recent column when we talked about the quarter-mile stretch that can be seen in Williston Park. Eileen McKillop of Barwick Blvd. showed me another section near Bruce Terrace just across Westbury Ave. This "speedway" allowed cars to go 40 mph, an unheard of speed at that time.

At Precious Cards and Gifts on Mineola Blvd., the manager, Maryann Fearon, introduced me to Lou Citro of Albertson Place and to Murray Chanin of Mineola Blvd. Lou's son of the same name is the owner of the store.

I was mentioning the newspapers that existed when I was a young man and that got me to thinking about the then famous columnists. Tops were Walter Winchell, Drew Pearson, Westbrooke Peglar, Max Lerner, Walter Lippmann and Bob Considine. All are long forgotten now, except maybe Winchell, as many will remember his radio broadcasts, "Hello, Mr. and Mrs. North America and all the ships at sea" delivered in rapid fire fashion.

Lou and Nancy Librandi of Andrews Rd. were off to register their son, Nick, 3-1/2 for soccer when I met them. Nick told me to be sure and mention the half. They also have a 2-year-old son, Michael.

Roseanne Toritto of Raff Ave. is the young lady with the beautiful voice who sings on alternate Sundays at Corpus Christi Church. Speaking of that church it's always good to see the smiling faces of Joe and Pat Rudolph. They are the parents of police officer Tom.

Saw a pretty fair volley between State Senator Mike Balboni and Paul May while passing the tennis courts in Memorial Park.

Deacon Brian Mannix gave an excellent homily on the Feast of Corpus Christi. The Mass was concelebrated in English and Portuguese and a beautiful hymn was rendered in Portugese by Anriano DeSilva. What a grand voice he has.

The village told us months ago that parking was free on Saturday, Sunday and Holidays. Yet the meters still have stickers on them reading free on Sunday and Holidays only. No mention is made of Saturday. Confused shoppers fearing a ticket put money in the meters. It is completely unfair to them and it hurts the storekeepers as well.

That good-looking Hudson Diner in the east end is owned by Frank and Rose Signorelli and their son, Richard. The family lives in E. Williston. Betty Rowley of Beebe Rd. and Lucille McDowell of Lincoln Ave. lunched there. Another good customer is Lou Santosus.

Enjoying dinner at Eleanor Rigbys was Lucille Scopinach, Karen Nelson and Melanie ReDavid of Mineola.

Everybody was pleased that the Supreme Court gave the OK to saying "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. The atheistic forces, however, have warned us that they will try again. Some 90 percent of Americans favor "Under God" but we still have to remain vigilant.

Manny LoSquadro of Albertson, owner of Hy-Grade fuel, has suddenly lost his eyesight. Doctors are hopeful that his vision can be restored. We were amazed when we saw him enter the Jericho Diner with a cane and a friend leading him to a table.

Brother Richard Hartz of Chaminade keeps us abreast of the school's plan for the old Koeppel property. Chaminade plans to convert it to a Rec center. Bro. Richard is that man who skates daily throughout the west end.

Jeff Rubin has closed his shop "Collectors of Firearms" on Jericho Tpke. His dad, Morris, owned a shop at the same location called Mineola Paint and Wallpaper. The Rubins were longtime residents of the village, living on Emory Rd.
