The Mineola High School Class of 2004 turned the page on the book of their lives on Saturday when they became high school graduates. At a graduation ceremony on Saturday on the campus of C.W. Post, the graduates received their diplomas ending a lifelong pursuit.
Class of 2004 President Antonia Bortone addressed her classmates, administration, parents and gathered friends about the resiliency it takes to graduate college. The members of the class, she said, are the type of people who make mistakes. But they are also the type of people who overcome adversity, have the ability to learn from each other, grow, achieve and succeed, she said.
Antonia told the class to always remember the mistakes, but more importantly what was achieved as a result of learning from those mistakes.
After Antonia's address, graduate Elena Strano eloquently sang All Love Can Be. from the movie A Beautiful Mind.
Whereas the valedictorian and salutatorian often have individual speeches prepared, valedictorian Jean Hwang and salutatorian Sandra Fernandes addressed the class together. Their speech, "Lessons from the Real World" can be found in this newspaper.
Graduates Kenneth D'Elia and Kirsten Olsen then sang This Is the Moment, which, appropriately, captured the moment.
Superintendent of Schools for the Mineola School District Dr. Lorenzo Licopoli offered his advice to the class. He told then to help each other, have a purpose in life and set high standards.
Mineola High School Principal Dr. Michael Nagler admitted he had writer's block when it came to writing. However, when it came time to deliver his speech, Dr. Nagler had no problem as he challenged the members of the class to make their marks in the world, marks that will be a victory for humanity.
Board of Education President Steve Siwinski related the story of his graduation from Mineola High School 29 years ago. That time was similar to the current year in that the nation was at war, there was a gas shortage and job opportunities were dim. However, the nation persevered.
It was then the time to hand out the diplomas. The students, wearing Mustang red and white, marched proudly up to the stage and accepted the certificate that represents for them a lifetime of learning and of overcoming the struggles that come with growing up.
Now, the seniors will begin there next stage in life where they will pursue their dreams with the lessons they learned in Mineola.
Congratulations to the Class of 2004.
