Eighth graders Albert and Alberto Diaz burst onto the athletic scene in 2003, bringing home two gold medals in Mineola's first ever entry into the Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged. After a year of training, they returned on June 4 to defend their titles, and confirm Mineola's place among the state powerhouses of United Cerebral Palsy, Viscardi, and what appeared to be the entire NYC public school system. Both boys competed in several events, including soft discus, the 40 meter power race and the shot put, where their work with physical education teacher Mr. Al Weidlein showed in improved accuracy and distance.
Despite their small numbers, Albert and Alberto were not alone. They came with an entourage of supporters from their middle school, waving banners and cheering the brothers to victory. When asked what he liked most about the games, Alberto responded "racing, because it's great to see everyone cheering me on."
Congratulations to our athletes, Albert and Alberto Diaz, for representing Mineola so well in the 2004 Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged, and for opening the door to so many future contenders.
