The Mineola High School girls varsity lacrosse team did something that few sports teams ever accomplish. The Lady Laxers completed the regular season with a perfect record.
The team, coached by Frank Massaro, finished with a record of 12-0, heading into the playoffs. With a potent offense, averaging 15 goals per game, and a stingy defense, allowing only six goals per game, the girls are working hard to improve their skills while gearing up for tougher competition in the playoffs.
The Lady Laxers took their momentum into the playoffs, where they defeated Plainedge in the first round.
Massaro pointed to a game on April 24 as a barometer of the season. Mineola played Hicksville in a showdown of unbeaten teams. The Mustangs prevailed 16-5.
A successful team is comprised of several successful players. The Mustangs are no exception. Senior Ali Carnabuci is on her way to shattering the school record for goals scored. She will attend Marist College in the fall on a lacrosse scholarship.
Senior Courtney O'Connell is on track to break the school assist record. She will be attending Iona College.
Sophomore Ali Kain has shown great improvement and is consistently putting up big numbers.
As he discussed his players, coach Massaro also named seniors Michelle Bucalo, Melissa Dadich and junior Michelle Guelbart as players who round out the team's unselfish attack. Bucalo will be attending James Madison University. Dadich is heading to Quinnipiac.
Of course, any successful team has good defense. "The defense is tough and tenacious with ever improving stick skills," said Massaro.
Juniors Amy Kemmler (Academic All-American), Christina McCarthy and Nicole Peralta, sophomores Alyssa Glenn and Marisa Jeter and senior Liz Kocienda (Academic All-American), who will be attending Gettysburgh College, ease the burden of the netminding tandem of Jess Antonison and Nicole Guelbart.
Ground ball specialist senior Joanna Caning (York College) directs a crew of versatile speedsters in the midfield. The talents of junior Katie Steen, sophomore Kasey Hughes an the freshmen trio of Lauren and Kristen Mobyed and Katie Carter will make for a smooth transition into the future of girls lacrosse at Mineola.
This squad has also been dedicated as a New York State Scholar Athlete Team, which means the student-athletes on the team have a grade average of at least 90.
