Father James Bowman, pastor of Corpus Christi, was enraged at Jimmy Breslin's column attacking Catholics. "This man, who has the audacity to claim to be a Catholic, continually attacks our faith," said the pastor. He urged all to write to Newsday expressing outrage at this man's anti-Catholic attacks. What made it even worse was that the column appeared on Easter Sunday.

A huge crowd of 220 people attended the 25th anniversary of the Mineola Ambulance Corps at the New Hyde Park Inn. Sadly, Louise DiGiorgio's illness did not permit either she or her husband, Joe, to attend. They, together with Bill Morgan, founded the Corps. Among those we had a chance to talk to, were Kenneth Solosky, Brian O'Loughlin, Edward Rummel, Russell Brown, Michael Safier and the president, Pat Tobin, Jim and Maureen Gillick, Bruce and Patricia Chester, John and Terry Urban, Sal Cataldo and friend Carmela, John Da Vanzo, Assemblyman Tom DiNapoli, Chris Airey, Susana Toriz, Inspector Lorraine Hannon, Larry Speciner, Paul Cusato, Scott and Linda Fairgrieve, Mayor Martins and Larry Werther.

Pete Vassiliadis has owned Pete's Barber Shop for the past 34 years. He and his wife, Tina, live on Foch Blvd. Speaking of barbershops, remember Tom's that was located on Jericho Tpke. near where Harry Katz is today? The shop has been gone many years now and I learned that Tom recently died. He always walked around town with his cigar in his mouth and the Racing Form under his arm. He played the races every day. He spent his time sitting or walking in the park, reading the Form in the hospital's waiting area or walking to the OTB office. Tom always wore a suit and tie even in the heat of summer and was immaculately dressed. He never married and had no family. I never knew Tom's last name, but he was one of those unforgettable people.

Yankee and Met fans should look up the greatest pitching World Series of all times. John McGraw's NY Giants faced Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics. Christy Mathewson pitched on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and shut out the A's all three times. Imagine pitching three times in five days. Joe McGinity pitches for the Giants on Tuesday and shut out the A's again. On Thursday, Eddie Plank beat the Giants for the A's one victory and that, too, was a shutout. The Giants won four games to 1. All five games were shutouts. That was The 1905 Series.
