The Wheatley School's Varsity Girls Basketball team has been recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) for academic excellence. The Scholar/Athlete Recognition Award Program, which was initiated by NYSPHSAA 13 years ago, recognizes athletic teams from across New York state for the exemplary academic performance of its team members. Based upon a composite of the grade point averages among team members, team champions are selected for each varsity sport for those high schools entering the competition.

The Wheatley School's Girls Basketball team achieved an average of 98.036, which was the highest team academic average in New York state. For this significant achievement the team has been declared New York State Champions for the Scholar Athlete Team Recognition Award competition. This is a credit to the athletes who have had to balance the demands of a rigorous academic schedule with the long hours of practice and competition required to successfully compete in interscholastic athletics at the varsity level.

The Wheatley School is proud of the recognition the team members have earned and offers its congratulations to Coach Kevin Meyers, who entered his team in the scholar/athlete competition and the members of the Wheatley Varsity Girls Basketball team. The following team members will be recognized for this remarkable achievement and the New York State Championshp Banner will be presented to the team at the regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting on April 19. The meeting will be held at The Wheatley School at 8 p.m.
