Sarah (Sally) Mary Nerod passed away peacefully on Jan. 24, 2004, just about a week shy of her 92nd birthday.

Born in Lakeview in 1912, the fourth of eight children of John and Delia Maloney Lockwood, Sally came to Mineola almost 74 years ago in 1930 as a nurse's aide at the then Nassau (now Winthrop) Hospital. There she met her future husband, Jack, who was superintendent for the hospital's laundry.

They married in early 1932 and took up Úquot;temporaryÚquot; residence in a small apartment at the corner of Second St. and Roslyn Rd. That Úquot;temporaryÚquot; residence continued to be her home for more than 70 years.

Sarah and Jack had five children - John, Sally, Mary, Richard and Virginia, all of whom graduated from Corpus Christi and Mineola High Schools. Jack passed away prematurely in 1951, after which Sally, then only 39, took on the task of raising and supporting the family with a variety of jobs.

Sally found time to be a member of several parish activities such as the Rosary Altar Society. She also was a member and officer of the Pocahontas Club and provided support from her modest resources to numerous charities.

One of her early memories as a teenager was being an attendant helping at Roosevelt Field in 1927 when Lindbergh departed on his solo flight to Paris. Typically modest, only in her later years did she even mention details of being there for that historic event.

A family-focused, loving and giving, friendly and kind lady, Sally maintained the sense of humor that her Irish mother passed on to her as well as a life following and practicing her Christian beliefs.

She was interred with her husband, Jack, and her youngest daughter, Virginia, in St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale and is survived by four of her children as well as nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
