The Mineola High School varsity wrestling team is a young bunch this season. "We have a very young team. It's mostly sophomores and freshmen. We'll need two years to contend for our league championship," said veteran coach Dan Guido.

Here 's a look at some of the wrestlers:

Tom Grimaldi, 145 pounds, returning All-County from junior year, expect big things from Tom.

Jim Holubowich, 215 pounds, is one of the top wrestlers in either the 189 or 215-pound classes in Nassau County.

Kyle Rosner, 140 pounds, excellent technique, All-Conference in 2003.

John Boland, 160 pounds, has made a big improvement from last year, should have an excellent season, was an All-Conference wrestler in 2003.

Julio Gauto, 171 pounds, wrestled mostly JV last year, doing well so far this year.

Hoil Chung, 152 pounds, first year senior, doing well.

Jason Vega, 160 pounds, up from JV and doing well.

Rory Singer, first year varsity.

The three sophomores who are starting varsity this season Coach Gudio mentioned when talking about the team are Leo Morales at 189 pounds, Nick Tonini at 112 pounds and Bryan Gallego. The coach says they should do very well.

Guido is also counting on new members to the program to grow and contribute such as sophomore Tiago Rodrigues and freshmen Mike Vasconcelos, Andrew Gross and Mike Marques. "They will wrestle on varsity and junior varsity and have excellent potential," the coach said.

Guido also pointed to another group of freshmen made up of Chris Granath, Gabriel Garcia, Carl Nunziata, Zane Kerney, Jon Hock and Kevin Brostek, who will be counted on. "These boys are all doing well and should have a good year," he said.

As has been the case for many seasons, Frank Massaro will be Guido's assistant and will handle the JV squad. The middle school wrestling coaches are Gary Santosus and Mike Palumbo.
