Corpus Christi Girls fifth grade basketball teams had a very busy weekend, first with Corpus Christi's (old school) team playing an awesome game on Saturday, Nov. 22, against St. Anne's and coming away with an impressive 26-6 win. Everyone participated in the win with Heather Gessner having the game high of 12 points, Katie Dul showed her scoring touch with two big buckets and Kayla Vesley and Erin Carr-Fragiacomo again shut down the opponents' top players with their aggressive defense.
Corpus Christi's other fifth grade team (New Girls on the Block) have not played since their 25-21 victory over Notre Dame giving both Corpus Christi teams identical 4- 2 records at the halfway point of the season.
The girls' highlight of the weekend was a "road trip" to West Point to see an exciting Army Women's Game against South Florida. The girls from both teams united to play at halftime against a tough Manhattan squad coached by Doreen and Herman Berrios.
The West Point players came out after the game to sign autographs and one of the players, Dionna McPhatern, was nice enough to give the Corpus Christi teams a tour with some history lessons. The day was complete with a beautiful scenic view of the Hudson River and mountains while listening to one of the cadets practicing his bagpipes.
The girls are really building up their frequent flier miles as they were invited to the Hofstra Women's Game this past Tuesday, Nov. 25, to go on the court with the team while being introduced and helping out on the bench during the game.
