The Wheatley varsity girls soccer team won the League 5 championship this year with a league record of 13 wins and one loss. Last year, the Lady Wildcats won the League 6 championship, and they had little difficulty, this year, sweeping through the competition in a more competitive league. Overall, the team achieved a record of 15-2-1, and advanced to the Nassau County championship game against Cold Spring Harbor. The game was played under the lights at Mitchel Field and remained scoreless through regulation play and three overtime periods before the number one seeded Cold Spring Harbor Seahawks scored in the fourth overtime period.
All-County goalie Alicia DeFino recorded 10 shutouts during the season and will represent Wheatley in the All-County Exceptional Senior game. Alicia is being recruited to play collegiate soccer next year. Sophomore Mona Lakaj led the team in scoring with 16 goals and 8 assists, and based on her fine performance, she garnered All-Class B honors. Seniors Katie Papadopoulos and Jackie Carlos, who along with Alicia DeFino were team captains, earned All-Conference honors, as did sophomore Allyson Grinfeld. Senior Scholar-Athlete honors went to Alison Price.
Head coach Paul Paino was recognized by his coaching colleagues who awarded him Coach-of-the-Year honors. Coach Paino has earned this honor for an impressive three times in the last four years.
For the second year in a row, the Wheatley School varsity cross-country team has won the Class "C" Nassau County championship and qualified to compete in the New York State Cross Country Championship Meet. Under the leadership of Coach Dan Walsh, the team ran through its competition, and with its second consecutive appearance in the state meet, established itself as one of the finest teams in the history of Wheatley athletics. Led by captains Sean Johnson and Corey Squire, the team also garnered two titles in the highly competitive Bear Mountain Classic Meet and the Nassau County Coaches Invitational Meet. Sean is the lone senior on the team.
Joining Sean and Corey in the state meet were teammates Ryan Birnbaum (10), Eric Florio (11), Yuting Chiang (10), Felipe Hugueno (11) and Greg Cutajar-Wynne (9). In a field of 11 Class "C" schools, Wheatley finished in ninth place, which represents a one-place improvement from last year's team. The state meet was held at Marcus Whitman High School, located outside of Rochester, and the meet was conducted in near freezing temperatures on a wind-swept muddy course.
The Wheatley girls cross-country team was led by Captain Abby Squire (9), who qualified to compete in the state meet with a strong performance in the Section 8 qualifier. In a field of 120 female runners, Abby finished in a very respectable 60th place. Both Cory and Abby earned All-County honors.
Other members of the varsity girls team were Kerry Neinstedt (12), Maanasa Indaram (12) and Deeba Zirari ( . Pushing the top seven runners were Christopher Carlin, Todd Goldstein, Vivek Kuncham, Harriman Lee, Jordan Manor, Robert Rosenbaum (11), Steven Sanfikippo and Rahul Sarif.
