The Corpus Christi girls 5th grade basketball teams (yes, teams) are off to an impressive start. After a successful first season, coach Nancy Gessner thought she would coach two teams.
Last year's team (Old School) so far in this young season has a record of 2-1 with both wins coming in thrilling and exciting overtime victories. As usual, Corpus Christi has all their girls involved in their well-rounded team.
Jacquie Behan has picked up where she left off last year with her tenacious defense and also scored 6 points in the overtime win at St. Boniface. Heather Gessner has been the most consistent scorer with 6, 6, and five points respectively in the three games. Kayla Vesley has been strong at the point and scored 4 points in the win against St. Boniface. Erin Carr-Fragiacomo has scored in both games she has played. Sarah Couto, Janine Miller, Maureen Purcell and Paula Pinto have all scored in this early season. Vickey Kim and Valentina Duran have been a force on the boards and "cool as a cucumber" Katie Dul hit the front end of a 1 and 1 with second left to give Old School a 12-11 win over Notre Dame.
Corpus Christi's new team (New Girls on the Block) are all first year players with the exception of Megan Brady (Thanks Meg!) and are off to a strong 3-2 start. Veteran Meg is playing point, is a team leader and has scored in each of her team's games. The Medlock sisters, Kalie and Kerri, are making a name for themselves as they are not only scoring consistently, but are passing for numerous assists. Krystie Kern has had the biggest scoring output so far this season with 14 points in an 18-10 victory over St. Thomas. Tina Marie Basile also has had the scoring touch with 6 and 7 points in their last two games. Ann Marie Rolon and Raiany Silva have also scored for the New Girls on the Block. Catherine Carboine, Natalie Monroe, Ashley Pusey and Kim Lopes have added to the victories and excitement of this team with their solid and fierce defense.
The girls are going to take a road trip to West Point on Sunday, Nov. 23 to see a women's basketball game at 1 p.m. and then play at halftime. Limited tickets are still available at $2, which includes the game, followed by a tour of West Point. If you are interested, call Keith or Nancy Gessner at 248-7115.
