  • News: Protecting Children While on Bicycles

    Bicycle accidents can happen anywhere especially in these days when streets have become more dangerous with big, faster vehicles and motorists talking on cellular phones. However, some community members are hoping to instruct children on bicycle safety and improve skills during the first Bicycle Skills and Safety Day, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Village of Mineola Community Center, 155 Washington Avenue.   • News: EPA to Hold Meeting Thursday on Jackson Steel

    The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be holding a meeting on Thursday, Oct. 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Mineola Village Hall's community center at 155 Washington Avenue, to address questions regarding the results of the investigation at the Jackson Steel Superfund Site and former location of the Tutor Time Day Care Center and upcoming activities.   • Sports: Garden City Park Breaker Notes

    Change in soccer, like the seasons, is inevitable. However, over this past summer, the Breakers seem to have had more than their fair share. Here's a quick recap. Over the summer, the Breakers saw four original players leave the team, looking for greener pastures. With this shortfall, the coaching staff recruited seven replacement players. This was done not only to replace the girls who left, but to meet the need for an expanded roster. The need for an expanded rooster coincides with the move to playing on a full size field. And lastly, based on a decision by the parents and coaches, the team moved to the Garden City Park Generals Soccer Club. FULL STORY

  • Sports: Food Allergies Among School Aged Children on the Rise

    According the Food Allergy Network, it is estimated that approximately 6 to 8 percent of all school-aged children suffer from food allergies. The most common food allergies among children are to milk and eggs. However, of the four foods (peanuts, nuts, fish, and shellfish) that produce the most severe allergic reactions, peanuts affect the greatest number of children, and the rate of incidence is increasing.
