The Mineola High School varsity football team opened defense of its Conference IV crown with a heart-breaking, last second, home-opening defeat. After battling back from a 15-0 second quarter deficit to tie the games, Mineola dropped an 18-15 decision to visiting East Rockaway. Matt Cooney kicked a 26-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining.

The winning score was set-up by Chris Collura's interception and return to the Mineola 37-yard line with a little over a minute left in the game. Mineola got on the scoreboard for the first time in the second quarter when senior running back Dan Medlock scored on a four-yard run. Julio Gauto added the extra point. The Mustangs evened the score at 15 in the fourth quarter. Running back Ivan Anania gathered in a screen pass from junior quarterback Rich Carter and rambled 90 yards for the touchdown. Carter then reached senior running back Jim Holubowich with a pass for the two-point conversion to tie the score.

Mineola notched its first victory of the season in game two, a 14-13 road win at North Shore on Thursday, Sept. 25. The Mustangs scored all of their points in the second quarter. Danny Medlock scored on a five-yard TD run. Later in the quarter, senior wide receiver Jerelle Harrison hooked up with quarterback Rich Carter on a 52-yard TD pass. Peter Averaimo kicked both extra points. Medlock carried the ball 16 times for 100 yards while Holubowich churned up 70 more yards on 14 carries. He also made 11 tackles to lead the Mustangs defense.

The Mineola boys varsity soccer team opened its season by winning four of its first seven games, dropping two decisions and coming away with a tie in the other. In the first round of the annual Mustang Cup Tournament, Mineola defeated Valley Stream North 1-0 on a goal from senior Jason Moston early in the game. Goaltenders Ben Molina and Kevin Franciotti combined to make seven saves in the shutout.

In the championship game of the tournament, Mineola was beaten by Carey 5-2. Kevin Miller and Anderson Osorio had two goals each for Carey. Helder Mendes and Ramon Valente scored the Mineola goals.

The Mustangs opened play in Conference B-III with a 2-2 tie at Manhasset. John Calvao and freshman Gustavo Dias each scored for Mineola while goalies Chris Molina and Kevin Franciotti combined to make four saves.

Mineola earned its first conference victory with a 1-0 win at Wantagh. Helder Mendes scored the game's only goal off a rebound midway through the first half. The Mustangs shutdown Wantagh the rest of the way. Molina stopped three shots to earn the shutout.

Mineola got another win five days later, notching a 2-0 victory at Great Neck North. Seniors Vito Errico and Joao Sousa each scored goals. Errico's game on a cross from 20 yards. Again, Ben Molina and Kevin Franciotti combined for a shutout, making nine saves.

Mineola picked up another victory with a 3-2 decision at Friends Academy in a non-league contest. Freshman Gustavo Dias scored twice, including what turned out to be the game winner in the 75th minute. Senior Peter Marson also scored for the Mustangs. Defending conference champion New Hyde Park handed the Mustangs their first league loss on September 22 by a 3-2 score. Helder Mendes scored both Mineola goals, but they couldn't overcome a 3-1 deficit.

The Mineola varsity volleyball team notched its first victory in two years, beating Lynbrook in a five-game match in the season opener, 25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 16-25 and 25-23. Center Nicole Lapin had 11 assists while Allyson Strein and Michele Guido delivered eight kills each.

The Mineola women loved winning so much, they took three of their first four matches of the season. After dropping a five set match to perennial power Southside, the Lady Mustangs came back with wins over Seaford and Hewlett.

In the four game match with the Sailors, Michele Guido had 10 kills while Nicole Lain had 18 assists. Elizabeth Kocienda served 11 straight points in the fourth game.

Four days later, Mineola defeated Hewlett in four games. Kocienda had 10 kills while Juliette Barber added eight.
