Much has happened since Gus and Dorothy Calandrello were married on September 4, 1938. But one thing that hasn't changed is there love for each other.

Last week, the Mineola couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary together.

"I can't believe it because nobody takes me for my age," said Gus, who turned 88 years old on July 21.

For Gus Calandrello, life early on was not easy. He lost his father during World War I and also lost his mother when he was a young boy. He lived with his grandmother for the early part of his life.

Things worked out for Gus, though, as he would meet the love of his life, Dorothy.

The two lived in the same neighborhood in Astoria. At the time, Gus was delivering bread.

The couple was engaged for seven years before getting married in 1938 when Gus was 23 and Dorothy, who was born on Christmas Day in 1915, was 22.

Sixty-five years later, the couple is still going strong. What is the secret to staying married for 65 years? Gus says it's about hard work and communication and Dorothy says you have to compromise. "We all have our ups and down, but we talk to each other," she said.

At the September 3, Village of Mineola Board of Trustees meeting, Mayor Jack Martins congratulated Gus, who was in attendance, and Dorothy. All of those who know Gus and Dorothy and have had the pleasure of spending time with them wish the couple nothing but the best always.
