The last two games have been very productive for the Mineola Chiefs 6th Grade Lacrosse team. They moved their record up to 6-0 by beating Massapequa 5-1 on May 10 and Huntington 7-2 on May 18.
With their unselfish team play, nine players took part in the scoring against Massapequa. Winning the opening face off, midfielder Rocco Redmond got the ball to midfielder Joey Purcell who scored the first goal of the game. Early in the second quarter, after a great shot by attackman Chris Olsen was blocked by Massapequa's goalie, attackman Louis Flaherty picked up the rebound and put it in the net, making the score 2-0. The Lehman brothers teamed up when Jake passed to Cody who put it in the net giving Mineola a 3-0 lead. Goal number four was scored when defenseman Bryan Vesely cleared the ball to midfielder Rocco Redmond who took it to the cage and put it in. Another set of brothers, the McCanns, teamed up to score the fifth and final goal for Mineola when midfielder Kevin had a nice pass to Connor who shot the ball past Massapequa's goalie. This victory could not have happened without the hustle of midfielders Troy Kerney, Ryan Gillooley, Greg Tannenbaum, John Sullivan and attackman Paul Krumholz, who combined for 18 ground balls.
For the second game in a row, the Chiefs' defense played their usual solid game, holding the opponent to under 13 shots. Goalie Bruce Defino had 11 saves and only a pointblank shot got past him. Keeping Massapequa out of the Mineola zone were defensemen Kyle Krass, Adam Arthur and Joey Annunziata with big hits and getting ground balls.
Once again Mineola's domination brought home a victory.
Playing perhaps their best game of the season, the Chiefs kept control over Huntington from start to finish.
Goalie Bruce Defino played outstanding with 22 saves. The defense, or otherwise come to be known as "The Big Five": Shamar Stephen, Bryan Vesely, Kyle Krass, Adam Arthur and Joey Annunziata, played aggressively with big hits and ground balls to keep Huntington out of the Mineola zone.
Offensively, seven different players scored the seven goals of the Chiefs. What seems to be becoming common practice, the Chiefs scored early in the game when attackman Chris Olsen (six ground balls) fed midfielder Rocco Redmond who scored on a low hard shot, giving Mineola the first goal of the game. From behind the cage attackman Louis Flaherty fed attackman Philip Schrieber, who scored his first goal of the season. Early in the second quarter midfielder Joey Purcell dished off to attackman Connor McCann who finished the play with a nice goal. Winning the next face off, midfielder Jake Lehman fed the ball to midfielder Ryan Gillooley who had a nice pass to attackman Louis Flaherty who shot and scored, ending the half with Mineola 4, Huntington 0.
Early in the third quarter, Huntington got one by Defino, but Mineola answered back. On the ensuing face off, midfielder John Sullivan picked up the loose ball and made a nice pass to attackman Paul Krumholz who scored on a nifty move, making the score 5-1. After another early goal by Huntington in the fourth quarter, midfielders Cody Lehman, Rocco Redmond and Joey Purcell set up a nice play when Lehman passed to Redmond who fed Purcell who scored the sixth goal for Mineola. The final goal for Mineola was scored with a great shot by attackman Chris Olsen on a feed by Redmond.
As always, this win could not have happened without the customary physical game played by midfielders Kevin McCann, Troy Kerney and Greg Tannenbaum.
Once again, the Mineola Chiefs sixth grade lacrosse team showed that team unity is the key to success and their 6-0 record proves that.
