Even though the Memorial Day Parade had to be canceled due to the heavy rains, Memorial Day ceremonies were held inside the Mineola Community Center on Washington Avenue.
There were a couple of hundred people in attendance as master of ceremonies Commander Sal Cataldo of the American Legion Mineola Memorial Post #349 presided over the ceremony. In attendance was New York State Senator Michael Balboni, Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, Mineola Mayor Jack M. Martins and the village board along with the membership of the Mineola Volunteer Fire Department, Mineola Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Mineola Auxiliary and Boy Scout Troop #45 of Mineola.
Also sitting on the dais were Ann Galante, receiver of taxes for the Town of North Hempstead, former North Hempstead Town Clerk John DaVanzo, Nassau District Court Judge Scott Fairgrieve, and Commander Manny Grilo of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Private Adolph Block #1305 of Mineola.
The veterans organizations would like to thank all those who came out to join them. The reason Memorial Day is celebrated is illustrated on the plaque on the Veterans Monument at Mineola Memorial Park.
