The Mineola Chiefs sixth-grade lacrosse team improved its record to 3 wins - 0 losses when they beat North Shore 7 - 5.
Mineola took the lead for the first time this season by scoring the first two goals of the game. Midfielder Rocco Redmond won the starting faceoff and drew two penalties, making North Shore two men short. Minoela didn't waste this two-man advantage as attackman Louis Flaherty made a great pass to midfielder Joey Purcell who put a nice shot past North Shore's goalie putting Mineola on the board 1 - 0. Three minutes later, attackman Chris Olsen gained possession of a loose ball, passed to midfielder Jake Lehmann who put the ball in the net for a 2 - 0 lead.
Mineola continued to show great team effort as Midfielder Kevin McCann assisted Cody Lehmann on his first goal of the season, and attackman Paul Krumholz, taking a nice pass from Connor McCann, scored the fourth goal coming from behind the cage. Jake Lehmann scored his second goal of the game with a great pass from midfielder Ryan Gillooley. Outstanding hustle by midfielder John Sullivan kept the ball alive and enabled midfielder Cody Lehmann to score his second goal of the game. Overall, Mineola was quite impressive offensively, especially midfielder Troy Kerney who recorded five ground balls.
Defensively, Mineola was quite aggressive. Four of North Shore's five goals were scored when Mineola was a man down. Nevertheless, their aggressiveness paid off. Shamar "Big Hit" Stephen set the tone early with big hits and six ground balls. Bryan Vesely and Kyle Krass, each with five ground balls, were able to keep the ball out of Mineola's zone. Also playing their usual effective game were Adam Arthur and Joey Annunziata. Goalie Bruce Defino played another strong game with 17 saves on 22 shots.
Once again, teamwork and strong effort paid off for the Mineola sixth-grade Chiefs.
