After opening the season under summer conditions and playing their second game in springlike weather, Astoria Federal Savings played their third game of the year in the bitter cold on Wednesday evening against Sperry Credit Union.

The game started out uneventful as both teams were retired in order in the first inning. Astoria Federal Savings would open the scoring in the top of the second. Patrick Lupfer led off the inning with a walk and was followed by Alex Ward who singled. After a double steal and a passed ball, both runners scored putting Astoria Federal up 2 - 0. Sperry struck back in the bottom half of the inning. Back to back singles from the bats of Zach Chichi and Bobby Port put runners on first and second. After a passed ball the runners advanced and Michael Escobar stepped to the plate. Escobar hit a shot up the middle and Astoria's pitcher fielded the ball. An off balanced throw to the plate led to a collision between Astoria's catcher Michael Castellana and Chichi. Both Chichi and Port scored on the play after the ball was knocked away and the game was tied.

Andrew Ines walked to lead off the third for Astoria and was followed by Brendan Maloney. Maloney was hit by a pitch and Patrick Lupfer followed with a walk to load the bases. All runners advanced on a wild pitch with Ines scoring the go ahead run. Alex Ward beat out a slow roller up the first base line and Maloney crossed the plate. Bryan Williams grounded out to first knocking in the third run of the inning and Michael Castellana's 5-3 fielders choice pushed across the fourth run of the inning putting Astoria ahead 6-2. Astoria Federal added two more runs in the top on the fourth. James Kelly (2 for 2 with a walk) singled to center and Maloney walked. Patrick Lupfer followed with a hard hit triple into the gap in left center that plated Kelly and Maloney putting Astoria ahead 8-2.

Sperry Credit threatened in the bottom on the sixth scoring two runs closing the gap to 8-4. A single by T.J. Winters and a walk to the next batter brought Zach Chichi to the plate. After a pass ball advanced the runners, Chichi hit a 2 RBI single to center.

Other outstanding performances of the day were from Astoria's Jonathon Reis who reached base in all three of his at-bats with a walk, HBP and a single. Sperry's Joe Wellbrock pitched two innings of shut-out ball in relief on the very cold spring night.

It was a fine Saturday evening with a 6:30 p.m. start for the majors Harry Katz team and the Sperry Credit Union team, managed by Greg Wellbrock.

In the first inning, Katz opened it up with Nick Franzini, Joseph Calabro and John Carlo Clancy all getting on base. With aggressive base running and stealing, all three boys were able to score, giving Katz a 3-0 lead.

With outstanding pitching by Clancy for the first three innings, including seven strikeouts, the Katz team was in good shape. In the fourth, Nick Gallina smashed a double. Mike Cardillo then whacked a single to drive him home. Dean Dombrowski then hit a single to know Cardillo home for two more Lions runs.

While Frank Texiera was solid in the field, Billy Gerstner slugged the ball. Robert Sallie was then asked to close out the game on the mound for a second time, hurling three great innings with six strikeouts and preserving the 6-0 shutout for Harry Katz.
