Silas K. Peavy, 98, of Mineola, died on April 1, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Leah Jonas Peavy; daughters Dr. Hannah Peavy November of Bethesda, MD, and Elizabeth Connolly of Mineola; grandchildren, Robert, Maureen, James and Katherine Connolly and Joseph and Elizabeth November. He is also survived by his brother Ira Peavy and nieces.
He enjoyed a long career in the book business working for Macmillan and later Crown Publishing. He spent many years on the road as a traveling salesman. His journeys across much of the US served as basis for his many anecdotes about personal experiences in our nation during the Great Depression, WWII and the Civil Rights movement. His stories provided an eyewitness account of many major events in history.
A recurring theme was his affinity for the nation's railroads. As a very young boy he met Theodore Roosevelt on an Oyster Bay train. His grandchildren were amazed by his ability to recite all of the stops on LIRR trains as well as many inter-state railroads. His mind was indeed a treasure for his family. He would often describe the family history with great detail.
In retirement, Silas and Leah moved from Forest Hills to Mineola to be closer to the Connolly grandchildren. He enjoyed reading his daily New York Times and always completed the crossword puzzle. Each issue of the Mineola American was read carefully for stories that included his grandchildren.
Donations can be made in Silas Peavy's memory to the Mineola Volunteer Ambulance Corps, the American Cancer Society or the American Red Cross.
