At the Mineola School District Board of Education meeting on Thursday night, the district unveiled the first phase of its 2003-2004 budget. Preliminary figures call for a budget of $63,201,559, a 6.8 percent increase over last years budget. With an incredible 3-2 overtime win over the first-place Chiefs, the Blackhawks have pushed their winning streak to eight games and have taken over the top spot in the Bantam Division. The Blackhawks finished the regular season with a record of 8-2-1 and since then have won three more playoff games without a loss. FULL STORY

The winter sports season in high school athletics are the longest. The months of practice, games, matches and meets in cold gymnasiums and overheated wrestling rooms seem, at times, never-ending. The payoff or satisfaction comes for the teenage athletes with championships and being honored for what they accomplished. Mineola High School's six winter sports teams garnered their share of post season honors this year. A total of 37 different student-athletes earned honors of one kind or another this winter.
