Having put their taste of early success behind them in their non-league play, the Lady Mustangs set their sights on the toughest part of their schedule; league games versus conference opponents.
The Lady Mustangs opened their first game versus the Lynbrook Lady Owls. In a very physical game, the Lady Mustangs played their opponents fairly even, but found themselves behind 17 -13 at the end of the first quarter. Unfortunately, just as quickly as the second quarter started did the Lady Mustangs fall further behind in the second quarter by losing their shooting touch. Meanwhile, Lynbrook exploited Mineola from outside as their guard exploded for 11 points in the second quarter as Lynbrook pulled away at the half to a 37-21 lead. Looking to get back in the game in the second half, the Lady Mustangs could do no better than play Lynbrook even as Mineola went down to defeat in a 60-46 loss. Liz Terezo led Mineola in scoring with 11 points with support from Kristin McNally with 10, and Caitlin Orlando with 9, in a losing effort.
Looking to put their Lynbrook game behind them and get back on track, Mineola faced Great Neck North. Once again, the Lady Mustangs faced an effective playmaker at the guard position. Coming out on fire, North's point guard was a one-woman show. Only Christine Medlock's strong first quarter kept Mineola in the game as first quarter came to a close with North leading 15-10. Led by Kristen McNally in the second quarter, Mineola offset North's point guard and allowed Mineola to pull within 4 points as North maintained their lead 24-20. Opening the third quarter it was Liz Terezo's turn to keep Mineola in the game. Her inside game with drives to the basket kept Mineola even as North set up their outside scoring as Mineola's defense collapsed on North's point guard as she passed out to the perimeter for an open shot. This game plan worked well as North held their lead as the third quarter came to a close with North leading 41- 36. The fourth quarter opened with Kristen McNally hitting two three pointers, but Mineola could do no better than to pull within four points, as they dropped their second game in a row 54-50. North's point guard led all scorers with 33 points. Kristen McNally led Mineola with 20 points with support from Liz Terezo with 14, and Christine Medlock with 7, in a losing effort.
Looking to stop their two game losing streak, Mineola next faced Roosevelt. For the third game in a row, the Lady Mustangs faced an effective playmaker at the guard position. With Lauren Flynn leading the charge, Mineola could do no better than play Roosevelt even as the first quarter came to a close with Roosevelt leading 15-14. The second quarter opened with Roosevelt taking their game inside and straight down the lane. Mineola had no defensive answer as Roosevelt opened up a 9 point lead at the half 34-24. The third quarter opened with Mineola literally losing their handle on the ball. Repeated turnovers kept Mineola's offensive output to a season low 4 points and prevented them from getting back into the game as Roosevelt scored only 8 points to increase their lead to 42-29. The fourth quarter opened with Kristen McNally leading the way as she found her touch to hit a couple of three pointers. But it was too little, too late, as Roosevelt cruised to a 54-44 win. Once again Kristen McNally led Mineola with 15 points with support from Liz Terezo with 11, and Lauren Flynn with 7, in a losing effort.
Now looking to stop their losing streak, which had reached a season high three games, the Lady Mustangs faced Valley Stream South. With Liz Terezo leading the charge, scoring 6 first quarter points, Mineola moved out to a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter opened with Mineola pressing South in their backcourt. This pressure paid off as South could only score 5 points in the quarter as Mineola increased their lead to 7 points at the half to lead 21-14. Kristen McNally led the Lady Mustangs with two three pointers in the third quarter as Mineola increased their lead to 10 points to lead 34-24. The fourth quarter opened with South employing a defensive press against Mineola. Much like Mineola's success in the third quarter, South shut down Mineola's offense in the fourth quarter and slowly climbed back into the game. Only a lay-up by Kristen McNally with 8.3 seconds left put the game out of reach for South as Mineola hung on for the win 37-35. Both Kristen McNally and Liz Terezo led Mineola to the win with 15 points, with support from Caitlin Orlando with 6.
Looking to build on their win against South, the Lady Mustangs faced the Bethpage Lady Eagles. Once again, Mineola faced an effective playmaker at the guard position. Bethpage opened the game driving straight down the middle of the lane for uncontested lay ups. Mineola's efforts to stop this offensive plan resulted in early foul trouble for its starters and sent Bethpage to the line early and often as the first quarter came to a close with Bethpage leading 18-6. Looking to stir the pot, Mineola came out pressing defensively. Offensively, Lauren Flynn, Liz Terezo and Melissa Dadich led Mineola back to cut Bethpage's lead to only 5 points at the half, 32-27. Opening the third quarter, Mineola once again reverted to the defensive press with good results. Offensively, Lauren Flynn continued her hot hand with medium range jumpers and drives to the basket, Kristen McNally hit two three pointers, and Liz Terezo worked the lane to ignite the offense as Mineola pulled to within a point 45-44 as the third quarter came to a close. As the fourth quarter opened, Mineola continued to press. Bethpage, however, not inclined to allow Mineola to continue their defensive success, ran set plays to break the press and forced Mineola to go back to their zone defense. Bethpage's ability to break the press opened up their offensive, allowing them to score 20 fourth quarter points. Bethpage then tightened their defensive backbone and held Mineola to just 11 points in the fourth quarter as they won going away 65-55. Lauren Flynn led Mineola with 20 points, with support from Liz Terezo with 12 and Kristen McNally with 11 in a losing effort.
Needing a win to save their chances for a playoff spot, the Lady Mustangs faced the Manhasset Indians. The Lady Indians quickly demonstrated why they are considered a strong title contender this season. Opening the game, Manhasset quickly set the pace of the game with fast breaks and strong rebounding, both offensively and defensively as they staked themselves to an early 17-6 lead at the close of the first quarter. The second quarter saw Kristen McNally lead Mineola with a hot hand as she hit three three pointers, if only to keep pace with the Lady Indians, as they maintained their lead 30-19 at the half. The third quarter opened and closed with disastrous results for the Lady Mustangs as Manhasset went on a 23-5 scoring binge to extend their lead to 53-24 as the third quarter came to a close. The fourth quarter saw Liz Sanderleaf lead Mineola with a hot hand as she scored 5 points in the last quarter, as the two teams played evenly, as Manhasset coasted to a 67-36 win.
With four losses in their last five games, the Lady Mustangs have put themselves in a difficult position to make the playoffs. Only a strong run in their last four games will give them any chance to make the playoffs, and with a little luck, move up sufficiently in the standings to avoid a difficult first round game against the conference winner or first runner up. A tall order indeed.
