What an election Mineola has coming up this month with three people running for mayor, incumbent John Colbert, Maryanne Warnecke and Jack Martins and six people running for two trustee seats. We now have four parties in contention. When we started the Mineola American 50 years ago there was only one party, the Citizens, which had been in power for years. We used to plead for an opposition just to give people a choice. After years of editorially working for a two-party election it finally came. Some change today.

We were sorry to learn of the death of Jerry Cappellani, a longtime resident of the village. He was a charter member of the old West End Civic Association, a member of the Kiwanis Club and a MAA coach. On the same day Elizabeth Kearney passed away. She and her husband Peter owned Kearney Office Machines on Mineola Boulevard and later on Jericho Turnpike.

What a treat is the Nassau County Museum in Roslyn. We recently saw the exhibit on the life of Teddy Roosevelt. TR was the first president to be called by his initials. He was a great hunter and leader of the Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War. His first foray into politics was when he was named police commissioner of New York City. He later ran for mayor but was defeated. Elected to the legislature, he was on the way to becoming governor of New York state. He was elected vice-president in 1900. When President McKinley was assassinated he became the youngest president, 42, in US history. He was elected president on the Republican ticket in 1904.

Dissatisfied with the way the Republican Howard Taft was handling affairs he started the "Bull Moose Party" in 1912 as a third party. The Democrat Wilson won the election but Teddy came in ahead of the Republican incumbent Taft. During his campaign he was shot and wounded by a would-be assassin but did not stop his speech, continuing for another hour while bleeding from his wound. What a man he was.

The Cradle of Aviation Museum at Mitchel Field is something to see. The Wright Brothers' first flight from Kitty Hawk lasted 12 seconds but changed the world forever. The first planes evolved out of flying kites and gliders. The museum traces aviation history through Glenn Curtis, Earle Ovington, Eddie Rickenbacker and the other early fliers up to Lindy and his history-making adventure. Women are not forgotten either when we remember Anne Morrow and the first mail carrier Harriet Quimby. The museum goes up to the Space Age. We only saw a bit of it and hope to return to see the rest.
