Having fun at the Mustang Stakes.

Mineola High School's Jennifer Pirrone is quite simply the best high school bowler in Nassau County. Pirrone, a senior, placed first in the Nassau County Individual Girls Bowling Tournament. The competition took place at the Garden City Bowling Lanes on Feb. 8. Pirrone brought her "A" game to the county tournament. She bowled a 1257 series, which was 58 pins better than her closest competitor. Jennifer had games of 236 and 247 on her way to the title. Her 247 was the second highest game bowled that day. So, Pirrone is one of six girls who will represent Nassau County on the all-sectional team, which will compete in the state tournament at the East Meadow Bowling Lanes on March 1. Jennifer had a 175 average for the regular season, which was the second highest in the conference. She ranked 11th in Nassau County for the season. The Mineola Girls Varsity team took second place in the conference and ended up 10th in the county. Obviously, Pirrone didn't do it all by herself. Jennifer Boyle averaged 153 and was named all-league, while Diana Crowe was an all-conference performer with a 142 average. The Mineola girls finished 10th in Nassau County during the regular season and 15th in the county tournament.
The Mineola Boys Varsity bowling team competed in the Nassau County Team Tournament for the second year in a row. This event rewards the top 16 teams during the regular season, and Coach Helms Bohringer was proud that his young men made that elite field again this season. While the Mustangs did not win the tournament, sophomore Chris Williams averaged 184 while junior Vito Errico had a 182 average. The Mineola team had two members qualify for the individual county tournament. Bowlers had to have at least a 190 average in Conference play to qualify. Vito Errico notched a 192 average while freshman Anthony Tretolo chalked-up a 207 average during the season. Junior Peter Marson narrowly missed a spot in the individual tournament. He finished the season with a 188 average. None of Mineola's bowlers were able to crack the top seven spots in the tournament. Coach Bohringer said, "Since none of them are seniors, they should get another chance to compete next year." The coach went on to compliment his team, saying, "I am looking forward to next year with the return of Tretolo, Erric, Marson, Williams and my best JV bowler, Brian Ciuffo. To my seniors, Joe Tiseo, Mike Antoniou, Matt Sanderleaf and Matt Grilo, I say, thanks for the memories, and good luck in your future endeavors."
The Mineola High School Athletics Booster Club held its first Mustang stakes at the American Legion in Williston Park. Nearly 250 people attended the evening to raise funds for the Booster Club's Scholarship Program. Chairperson Miriam Anania, put together a very exciting event, which had people raving for weeks afterward. Brian Donahue was very entertaining as the master of ceremonies.
