The Cooperative Extension Service suggests that one of the ways you can reduce the hazardous products you have in your home is to make your own cleaning products. A sampling of these suggestions are:
* All-Purpose Cleaner:
4 tablespoons baking soda
1 quart warm water
Dissolve baking soda in warm water. Apply with a sponge. Rinse with clear water.
* Drain Cleaner:
1 cup baking soda
1 cup white vinegar
Boiling water
Pour baking soda down the drain. Add white vinegar and if at all possible, cover the drain for five minutes. Then pour the kettle of boiling water down the drain (the vinegar and baking soda break down fatty acids- allowing the clog to wash down the drain.)
DO NOT USE THIS METHOD IF YOU HAVE USED A COMMERCIAL DRAIN OPENER.
* Furniture Cleaner and Polish:
3 cups olive oil
1 cup vinegar
Mix together until well blended. Use a clean soft cloth to apply to the furniture.
* Brass Cleaner:
lemon juice
baking soda
Make a paste about the consistency of toothpaste. Rub onto brass with a soft cloth. Rinse with water and dry.
* Toilet Bowl Cleaner:
baking soda
vinegar
Sprinkle baking soda into the toilet bowl. Add vinegar. Scour with a toilet brush.
Last year we had a little more than three inches of snow for the entire winter. This year (as I write this article snow is predicted for Saturday and late Sunday) we have had in excess of 23 inches of snow. Please check on your neighbors and make sure they are okay.
Should there be seniors living on your block, I am sure that they would greatly appreciate help in cleaning their walks. Caring for one another is one of the characteristics of our residents that make Mineola the very fine community that it is.
Some of the most common frauds against consumers include:
* Deceptive contests, prizes, and sweepstakes
* Charitable solicitations
* "Recovery" services
* Travel scams
* Phony business opportunities
The following precautions will minimize your chances of being a fraud victim:
1. Know who you are dealing with. If you have doubts about a company, check with your state or local consumer protection office or Better Business Bureau where the company is located before you do business with them.
2. Keep a record of the companies you deal with over the phone. Include their names, addresses, telephone numbers and any payments made, including credit card information given.
3. Ask whether there are additional fees for shipping and handling, state sales tax, insurance or restocking, and if so, the amounts.
4. Ask about refund and exchange policies.
5. Know the total cost of the merchandise and any material restrictions on obtaining or using it.
6. Refuse prize offers where you have to pay or make a purchase in order to be eligible for a prize. That's illegal.
7. Don't be pressured or act on impulse. Take the time to understand an offer and talk it over with someone you trust.
8. Use common sense. If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Several have asked: "How do I know what my house is worth?" The answer will allow them to make an informed decision as to whether or not the county "reassessment" is fair or overstated.
