Corpus Christi boys seventh grade basketball team is back on track as they have won two in a row after losing two tough fought battles with St. Martins of Amityville (45-35) and a squeaker to St. Francis (35-33). Even in defeat, the boys from Mineola played inspired basketball, as those games were played with only six players dressed, as injuries, illness and school functions left the team small in numbers but not in heart.
The coaches agreed that even though the team lost these games on the score board, the boys won moral victories with the fans. The St. Francis game is most evident of that point as with two minutes remaining in the game, Mike Brady who had played his usual strong game 10 points, 11 rebounds, fouled out. This left only Gabe Couto on the bench, who earlier had to leave the game due to a knee injury. The pride that was felt by his coaches cannot be expressed in words, as Gabe slowly limped onto the court to join his fellow warriors into battle these last several minutes. They stopped St. Francis from scoring, but were unable to put up a shot as time ran out.
With the team back at full strength and Gabe Couto earning a spot in the starting lineup, Corpus Christi went on to defeat Sacred Heart (40-19) and Maria Regina (38-31) to bring their season record to 8-2 tied for second place with two games remaining.
A special thanks to the cheerleaders from Corpus Christi who have done a fantastic job with cheering at the home games this season.
