The St. Aidan 5th grade basketball team, coached by Tom Flynn and Rich Sloper, reached the semi-finals of the CYO Nassau-Suffolk playoffs before being eliminated by the undefeated team from Good Shepard of Holbrook. They were the only St. Aidan Girl's team from any grade and one of only eight 5th grade girls teams from the over 100 player CYO basketball on Long Island that chose to compete in the top "A" Division. St. Aidan finished the regular season in fourth place with a 7-5 record and had defeated St. Anthony of East Northport in the first round of the playoffs.
Playing against the best competition on Long Island, the girls relied on their speed and attacking defense to make up for their lack of size. The team was led by the outstanding, all-around play of guard Shannon Flynn. Always one of the smallest players on the court, she still managed to reach the 20-point mark in several games with a season high of 29 in the playoff win against St. Anthony. Allison Sloper was constantly in the center of the action with her many steals and hard drives to the basket. Elizabeth Hauser seemed always to be guarding much taller and heavier girls but was still the team's leading rebounder, toughest defender and one of its top scorers.
No opponent was able to race up and down the court as fast as Alexandra Nilson on a breakaway. Margaret O'Neill and Christina Mockler gave way many pounds and inches to opposing centers but provided solid defense and rebounding down low. Kristen Flynn played with the heart and muscle of a true power forward despite a point guard size body. Megan McCune and Samantha Stavish contributed both ways with their quick hands and head-up play. Nicole Fertitta always let her opposing player know she was in the game with her aggressive defense.
Shannon Allison, Elizabeth and Alexandra are continuing their basketball season by also playing for the L.I. Extreme. They are currently 7-0 and tied for first place in the Island Garden "Super League."
