Having put their taste of success behind them in their tournament and non-league play, the Lady Mustangs set their sights on their first league game versus Island Trees. Mineola started out quickly from both an offensive and defensive perspective building a 11-4 lead in the first quarter. However, just as quickly as they built their lead, the Lady Mustangs gave it back in the second quarter by scoring only 6 points while Island Trees exploited Mineola in the paint. Led by their center, Island Trees shifted to their inside game to come back to lead by one at the half 28-27. Relying on their bench, Mineola came back in the second half on scoring by Liz Terezo and Liz Sanderleaf to take the lead at the end of the third quarter 28-26. However, Mineola's big guns were silent in the fourth quarter as Island Trees outscored Mineola 12-7 to win by three points, 38-35. Liz Terezo led Mineola in scoring with 12 points with support from Liz Sanderleaf with 8, in a losing effort.
Looking to put their Island Trees game behind them and get back on track, Mineola faced West Hempstead HS in a non-league game. Coming out on fire, Lauren Flynn opened the first quarter with 3 three pointers and Mineola's defense held tight as the first quarter came to an end with Mineola leading 15-7. The second quarter saw Mineola go ice cold. Poor shooting, turnovers, and no second shot opportunities led to Mineola's lowest scoring quarter of the season, as West Hempstead came roaring back to take a 19-17 lead at the half. With Kristin McNally, Lauren Flynn and Caitlin Orando leading the way, Mineola clawed their way back to take a 2 point lead at the end of the third quarter 32-30. The fourth quarter saw Caitlin and Lauren continue with their hot hand as each hit a three pointer to lead Mineola. West Hempstead still had a chance to tie the score on a three pointer with 7 seconds left, but was turned back as Liz Sanderleaf came up with a steal as time expired. Lauren Flynn led Mineola in scoring with 15 points, with support from Caitlin Orlando with 13, and Kristin McNally with 8. Defensively, Christine Medlock grabbed 8 rebounds.
Playing their last non league game of the season, the Lady Mustangs next faced Bellmore JFK HS at home. Combining good passing and fast break baskets, Lauren Flynn's 12 first half points led Mineola's offense to a 33-30 half time lead. Mineola, playing much better than their score, allowed Bellmore to keep the game close as they hit only one of ten foul shots. Looking to take advantage of Mineola's gift, Bellmore pressed Mineola in the back court to open the third quarter. However, Mineola employed a defensive press of their own to hold Bellmore scoreless for over five minutes, and allowed only 6 points, as the third quarter came to an end with Mineola in the lead 43-36. The fourth quarter opened with Bellmore continuing to apply a full court press on the inbound passes. However, Mineola's ability to break the press, combined with Liz Terezo's 12 second half points, led the Lady Mustangs to win going away 63-48. Both Lauren Flynn and Liz Terezo led Mineola in scoring, each with 19 points, along with support from Christine Medlock with 13 (7 points off the bench in the fourth quarter).
With the balance of the schedule against league opponents, The Lady Mustangs faced Seaford HS, their second league opponent, on Reggie Carter night. With Lauren Flynn leading the way both offensively and defensively, with 8 first half points and 2 steals, Mineola took a 26-13 half time lead. Looking to get back in the game, Seaford opened the second half with a defensive press. However, Mineola's crisp passing and offensive plays effectively broke the press and kept Mineola in the lead 38- 23 as the third quarter came to a close. The fourth quarter saw Kristen McNally score 7 points as Mineola put on the defensive clamps as Mineola won going away 53-30. Kristen McNally led Mineola in scoring with 17 points, with support from Lauren Flynn with 16, and Liz Terezo with 9. Defensively, both Shalera Smith and Christine Medlock each had 6 rebounds.
With their combined record at 5 wins and 1 loss (1-1 in league games), the Lady Mustangs are poised to face the toughest portion of their schedule. However, their poor foul shooting and high numbers of turnovers remain the weakest part of their game. In many instances, these lapses make their games closer than they need to be or deny them the ability to put a team away early and coast to a win in the fourth quarter. The next three opponents in the upcoming portion of their schedule will not be so forgiving and will be a more accurate indicator of their current record.
