The Cornell Cooperative Extension sponsors numerous programs and has numerous publications which are informative.
The Consumer Helpline helped clarify whether club soda helps to remove stains.
The answer is: "Club soda's apparent effectiveness may be because it's often used immediately before a stain has time to set. It can sometimes remove a clear, colorless, water-based stain. But then, clean cool water can do this also. However, neither club soda nor water possess any grease removing properties, therefore, they are not effective on greasy, oily stains, such as butter or gravy!!
