The Mineola boys varsity bowling team found itself in prime position for another chance to be in the county tournament as they reached the midway point of the season. Coach Helms Bohringer's Keglers had a team average of 759 right after the holidays. The team is led by its freshman Captain Anthony Tretolo and his 211 average. Vito Erico is averaging 188 while Joe Tiseo is averaging 181. In the first match after vacation, the Mustangs defeated Garden City in exciting fashion 8 to 3. After Garden City won the first game 814 to 750, Mineola bounced back to take the second game 781-742, led by Tretolo's 242. Mineola saved its best series of the year for the third and deciding game, outscoring Garden City 875-699. Tiseo rolled a 220, while Peter Marson bowled a 215, Errico a 223 and Tretolo a 217. Mike Antoniou also bowled an average of 190 for the day. The Mustang win avenged a loss to Garden City in the season opening match. The Trojans won the first game 798-712. Mineola came back to take the second game 752-700, while Garden City grabbed the third and deciding game 785-674. Since that win over Garden City, Mineola defeated Great Neck South 753-772, 731-671 and 753-578. Vito Errico rolled a 206 in the second game of his 577 series. The Mustangs then dropped a close decision to North Shore, 723-815, North Shore's Jamie Collins rolled a 290 in the third game of his 684 series. Vito Errico bowled a 647 series for the Mustangs.
The Mineola Girls Varsity Bowling Team had amassed a record of 5 wins and 4 losses through Jan. 16. The season opened with a loss to Garden City 537-481, 525-558, 522-555, although Jennifer Pirrone bowled a 446 series for Mineola, including a 181 game. The Lady Mustangs notched their first win of the season over North Shore 515-539, 628-503, 651-509 as Jennifer Boyle bowled a 179 in the third game of her 472 series. Mineola next defeated Sewanhaka 603-529, 581-565, 686-560 on a day that Pirrone rang-up a 578 series, including a 205 in her first game. Mineola next defeated Great Neck South 628-441, 601-425, 534-535. Jenn Pirrone was again hot. She bowled a 192 in the first game and completed the day with a 543 series. Mineola and Carle Place then split a two-day, home-and-home series. The frogs prevailed on day one 486-584, 639-498, 601-600 behind Michelle Klein's 599 series. The Mustangs earned the spllit on day two 555-547, 622-536, 620-600. Jennifer Pirrone bowled a 194 second game and a 503 series.
Mineola got some revenge for its season opening loss to Garden City. The Mustangs bowled over the Trojans in their first match after the holidays 668-541, 584-610, 580-561. Jennifer Pirrone picked up where she left off before the holidays, bowling a 520 series, including a 189 in the second game. Pirrone led Mineola to a victory over Great Neck South, 564-496, 551-508, 549-549, when she rolled a 484 series. That was nothing compared to the day she had against North Shore. Jenn bowled a 235 in game two and completed an amazing 616 series as the Mustangs rolled over the shore 622-483, 685-494, 548-505. The Sewanhaka District squad cooled off the Lady Mustangs on Jan. 16. Sewanhaka won the first two games 664-634 and 712-600 before Mineola came back to take the third game 615-562. Jennifer Zappolo was too much for Mineola, with a 247 second game score and a 584 series.
