The St. Aidan's Seventh-Grade Girls' Basketball Team coached by Bob Kalenka and Rich Sloper capped off a succcessful first-half of the season by winning the annual St. Bernard's Thanksgiving Tournament. They defeated the host team 35-16 in the first round and St. Killian 36-25 in the Championship Game. Briana Sloper was named the Tournament MVP.
When the season opened the team was facing a difficult transitional year. They had ended last year with a two-point loss in the Long Island Championship semifinals. Now due to both an injury and a retirement from CYO competition, they were losing their longtime coach and two starters from that team. Despite playing with only seven girls on the roster, the team has adapted to a new "up-tempo" style of play that makes each girl on the court get involved in the action. They have responded by averaging 40 points a game with a 7-2 league record (9-2 overall) and are on the verge of clinching another playoff berth. Kristie Kalenka and Anne Buttafuoco have taken over the ball handling responsibilities and have shown their ability to run the offense as well as scoring key baskets when necessary. Lauren Wengenosky and Megan Bulva have made their presence felt under the basket with their rebounding and defensive play. Melissa Lanfair has been on the "point" during the full court press and her aggressive play has forced many turnovers. Briana Sloper and Amanda Affigne provide the offense, leading the team in scoring averaging 14 and 11 points. With three regular season games remaining, the team looks forward to avenging their two close losses and making another run deep into the playoffs.
