The Mineola boys varsity bowling team is looking to move up the ladder in Nassau County this winter. Coach Helms Bohringer welcomes back some experience. The best returning Kegler is a freshman. Anthony Tretolo attained All-County Honors as an eighth grader. He averaged 190 and Bohringer says, "He loves to compete." Another important returner is junior Vito Errico. Bohringer says, "Vito is looking to improve on the All-League honor he got as a sophomore." Some upperclassmen are adding some depth to the squad. Seniors Mike Antoniou, Joe Tiseo and Peter Marson could make the Mustangs a very good team if they can bowl solidly. Antoniou is only in his second year, but gets better each time out. Tiseo and Marson bowled in a few varsity matches a year ago and also helped the junior varsity to its second place finish. Coach Bohringer is also hoping for help from a couple of hot newcomers. Danny Shain and Brian Ciuffo will compete for varsity time and help the team. Bohringer says, "We are looking to repeat and get into the county championships, and hopefully improve on our 12th place finish." The coach sees Carle Place, the defending conference champ, and second place finisher, Sewanhaka, as the toughest competition.
As mentioned above, Anthony Tretolo is the best returning bowler on the squad. The 14-year-old has been on quite a roll recently. During the qualifying round of the Long Island Junior Bowling Association (LIJBA) Junior Masters Tournament, Anthony rolled his first perfect 30 game. He gives credit to his father and PBA champion Tommy Delutz, Jr. for his improvement. Anthony also points to plenty of practice as a key. The freshman also recently won the Long Island Youth Bowling Tour Adult/Junior Tournament at the Rockville Center Bowl. For his efforts, Anthony received a $350 scholarship.
