Hey, Jimmy Breslin give it a rest. We all know that the Catholic Church has its problems, but your repetitious mean-spirited columns are not helping.

Our Memorial Park has a pristine appearance, thanks to the lads from Chaminade who cleaned up around the sump and planted many bushes and flowers there and elsewhere in the park. With everything beautified in and around the sump and with the heavy rains we have had, the sump appears to be a beautiful lake.

One day that beautiful building of Gensel's may be gone. It has stood in one form or another at the corner of Jericho Tpke. and Herricks Rd. since 1829. Ralph Gensel opened the store in 1947 and now the fourth generation of the family is working there, Through Bob Gensel, Richard Gensel and now Justin and his sister, Erin. The tentative plan is to move Gensel's into a new shopping center about 100 yards to the east. Gensel's handsome Christmas windows with their red-coated soldiers used to win prizes from the Chamber of Commerce.

In 1850, businesses were opening in the village and settlers were buying land at $35 an acre. The post office was located directly north of the RR tracks on the east side of Main Street. The post office consisted of one wooden rack six-feet long and four-feet high and made up of pigeon holes and it rested against the wall of Fleet's General Store then owned by Luke Fleet. That's about where Fox's is today. That information we learned from Mineola historian Tom Barrick.
