Mary McCartney Carrillo believed deeply in the value of volunteer service and followed her belief that it was the work, not the pay that was of importance. She served as a Pink Lady for the Kaiser Hospital system in northern California and served in the same capacity at Sharp Hospital when the family moved here 30 years ago. Mrs. Carillo also served the Registrar of Voters in all positions as a poll worker and even opened her home for use as a polling location for her Mira Mesa neighborhood. A firm believer in the value of exercise, she combined this with her charitable interests and took on a personal goal to accomplish one charity walk per month. In this way she raised funds for such organizations as the Cat in the Hatt Literacy Program, Multiple Sclerosis research, Breast Cancer research, Cystic Fibrosis research, the Ronald McDonald House, AIDS research and the Helen Woodward Center.
In the early 1980s Mrs. Carrillo began to work for the City of San Diego in the public library system. She worked at the Central, San Carlos, Rancho Penasquitos and Balboa branches. When she retired, she stayed involved with the library system, serving terms as head of the Balboa Branch of Friends of the Public Library. There she spearheaded many of their book sales for much needed funds. Only recently she successfully lobbied the City Council for funds to improve the Balboa Library. In tribute to her work in organizing the annual essay contest for elementary school children, the Balboa Library plans to name this contest in her honor.
A longtime Episcopalian, Mrs. Carrillo served the Church of the Good Samaritan in the capacity of lector, visitor to shut-ins, bearer of altar flowers to those ill or bereaved and was a devoted volunteer at the church Thrift Shoppe. She was also active in service to the Episcopalian Community Services, making contributions to the Friends to Friends program the Teen Shelter, and was especially known for her work in their food and clothing distributions programs. Her warmth, wisdom and readiness to reach out to those in need will be greatly missed.
Mary McCartney was born Oct. 1, 1930 in Mineola. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Harold and Annetta McCartney, long time Mineola residents. Her father was Mineola's police surgeon while practicing at Nassau Hospital, now Winthrop University Hospital, and her mother was active with the NC Medical Auxiliary. She is a graduate of Mineola High School ('48) and Skidmore College ('52). She died on Oct. 20, 2002 in San Diego after a brief illness. She is survived by her sister, Annetta McCartney Matheson of Westport, CT; four children, Linda, Mark, Donald and Ramona; and six grandchildren.
